Activities & Events

Fun with Purpose

Building on the gentle teaching model, activities and celebrations at Disability Supports are used as an opportunity for companionship and healthy interaction. Birthdays are celebrated with an evening party for all those born that month. Cookouts are frequent and popular. And seasonal holidays are never missed, with special events around May Day, Independence Day, and a community-wide Oktoberfest event.

“Fun is an essential part of what we do because fun helps combat feelings of anguish and depression.”

Sheila Goscha, Vice-President/COO

Music

Few things bring as much joy as hearing a favorite song and moving to the beat. So life at Disability Supports includes lots of opportunities to tune into fun. A disco ball hangs from the ceiling, a karaoke machine is within easy reach — as is a well-stocked jukebox — a popular dance DVD gets played over and over, and on many afternoons a piano is wheeled into the center of the room for staff-led sing-alongs.

Exercise

We’re always ready to play, dance, or move outside. Regular exercise opportunities that support the abilities of each of our clients are an important part of each day. We might play a game of beach ball catch, do a chair dance, or simply move across the room. However we choose to engage, we are joy-forward and it never feels like a chore.

Day Trips

Traveling off-campus is a regular part of activities at Disability Supports. These trips include annual outings to the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, Mo., and Rock Springs, a 4-H camp located in the beautiful Flint Hills.
