About Us

Welcome to Disability Supports of the Great Plains

Disability Supports is a unique, caring community committed to providing the best in full-time and part-time services to children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

With locations in Hutchinson and McPherson, Kansas, we’ve provided social and medical services for individuals and families since 1996. Our community-centered model of service is what sets us apart from traditional providers. Our dedication to the empowerment of our clients is demonstrated every day through the enthusiasm of our staff, the customers who support the artistic and entrepreneurial endeavors of our clients, and the organizations that partner with us to provide world-class experiences and opportunities.

Started by Families for Families

Disability Supports of the Great Plains began serving people with intellectual disabilities in 1996, founded by a board staffed exclusively of parents. Four founding families invested in a new model of care for their children. This personalized approach looked different than what was considered normal at the time, when community services were less interactive, more patronizing, and resulted in poorer outcomes for clients.

Their passion for creating a higher standard of care became the foundation for the new organization. The dream of someday serving 50 clients was soon realized, and our organization grew beyond what the founders could have ever imagined.

Today, Disability Supports’ success, impact, and continued personal commitment is a direct result of an administration and staff completely focused on meeting the needs of those they serve with a focus on individual attention, higher professional standards and innovative care.

“A parent-driven board of directors has an emotional investment in the clients and, therefore, a stronger foundation as a not-for-profit service provider.”

Memorial Garden

Family means everything to Disability Supports. In honor of those that have supported our clients, and those clients we’ve been privileged to serve, we’ve created the beautiful Memorial Garden in McPherson.

The area features a meticulously landscaped lawn and garden, dotted by large, limestone monuments. Each stone features individually cast bronze plaques, each sharing an enduring memory of a dear member of the Disability Supports family.

At the center of the garden is a metal sculpture designed by local artist David Olson and constructed by skilled craftsmen in Hutchinson. The sculpture’s design conveys the spirit of support that is central to Disability Supports.
